Tool Maker Apprentice Pay scale starts at $23/hr with incremental advances up to $33 upon completion of the program Job Summary: Supports manufacturing by building molds, fixtures and related tools, completing repairs and revising design specifications as needed.
Essential Job Functions/Primary Responsibilities:
- Setup and operate Tool Room equipment as needed to build, repair, revise and service molds, fixtures and related tools in a safe and timely manner.
- Develop best practices and continually improve tool making skills under direction and guidance from senior Tool Makers.
Other Responsibilities:
- Complete other projects and/or tasks as assigned to support business needs
Education and Experience
Required:
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- 2 years tool making experience
- Experience with CNC machining, both set up and operation
Desired:
- 2-year technical degree in Machine Tool Trades/Tool and Die
- Experience with CAD/CAM programming
Other Expectations, Skills and Abilities: Set up and operate Tool Room equipment to manufacture, repair and revise components for molds, fixtures, and related tools in a safe and timely manner
- Ensures tooling is manufactured to build plans that allow for proper fit and assembly to final design specifications
- Uses CAD/CAM technology to analyze and interpret design intent
- Monitors tooling resource queues utilizing MRP systems to ensure operations are completed on time
- Informs the appropriate stakeholders of any expected delays or potential impacts to tool performance or delivery
- Inspects machined components and records dimensional data
- Troubleshoot and repair molds (silicone & thermoplastic)

What is it? A registered apprenticeship is a time-tested employee training system that combines job-related instruction with structured on-the-job learning experiences.
The program includes:
- 2,000 hours minimum of on-the job training
- 144 hours or more of related instruction per year
- 50+ hours of safety training per year
- Incremental wage increases as the apprentice gains experience
Position - Toolmaker
Location - this apprenticeship will be situated in our Delano, MN location, and will include external training partners within the Twin Cities Metro area.
Eligibility - qualifications include a high school diploma, at least one year of manufacturing experience and a basic understanding of the Toolmaking process.
Timeframe - the program is designed to include four years' worth of instruction. This time can be adjusted if a participant has applicable experience and can "test out" of certain components within the program. There is a 500-hour probationary period.
Completion - upon successful completion of the program, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion and, when applicable, a Journeyworker card from the Department of Labor and Industry, Apprenticeship Unit.
