Tug Boat Mate

Description

Key Responsibilities:

• Assist the Captain in operating and navigating the tugboat safely within harbor and coastal waters.
• Supervise deck crew and coordinate daily operations, including towing, docking, and barge handling.
• Monitor vessel systems and support routine maintenance and safety checks.
• Ensure compliance with all U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) regulations and company safety policies.
• Stand watch and handle navigation responsibilities as required.
• Assist with recordkeeping, safety drills, and inspections.

Qualifications:

• Valid U.S. Coast Guard Mate license appropriate for towing vessels (Mate of Towing or similar).
• Minimum 3 years of experience working aboard tugboats.
• Strong understanding of marine safety, navigation, and towing operations.
• TWIC card and current Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC).
• Ability to work effectively under pressure and communicate clearly with crew and supervisors.
• Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Preferred Experience:

• Experience in the New York Harbor or similar busy ports.
• Familiarity with barge work, ship assist, and harbor maneuvering.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements:

• Must be able to work on the water for extended shifts and in various weather conditions.
• Physical ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and move around safely on deck.
• Ability to respond quickly and effectively in emergency situations.
